Shoes and scapes

Oh much-neglected Cheapness Studies blog, what can I offer? Lately I've been all over the place, cheapness-wise - hopeless in terms of shoe purchases, but dedicated to cooking at home, but cooking with not-so-cheap farmers' market ingredients (garlic scapes are wonderful but at $3 a bunch...), but at least working between the semester and the onset of summer funding which helps offset shoeshoeshoes, scapescapescapes...

If anyone still reads this, consider this a call for suggestions.

I'd be interested in Cheapness thoughts regarding Newt Gingrich's assertion that he is frugal, which he apparently defines as "living within his means," while also having a half-million dollar credit account at Tiffany's. A lot of the media is treating this story like it's somehow what will torpedo his chances at the Republican nomination. (Divorcing your first wife while she has cancer; having an affair with a woman young enough to be your daughter while married to your second wife... these things can be forgiven. Getting your third wife nice jewelry, beyond the pale.)
